SINGAPORE – E-commerce giant Shopee, owned by Singapore-based and NYSE-listed gaming and information technology conglomerate Sea (formerly known as Garena), announced that it will start charging a 1% transaction fee on top of all sales beginning in August.

The e-commerce platform announced this via a communication sent to its users last July 11. In spite of this transaction fee, Shopee asserts that they will retain no commissions on its transactions – the transaction fee will be solely used for payment processing, regardless of payment method (be it wire transfer, credit card, or via Shopee’s own Wallet system).

Shopee remains one of the most popular online commerce platforms in Singapore, with a user base of over 1.5 million in the city-state.
